Do the Greens Offer Any Hope?

Joining a Green Party seemed like a good option, and I did. though there is no candidate in my riding. I am a member, but I am not terribly optimistic.

I support the movement because, frankly, I don't know where else to go. The Ontario Green Party is pushing for Proportional Representative reform, something that I strongly support to rebuild democracy.

My pessimism stems from:

  • the Green Party is dismissed offhand as socialistic, radical, and anti-establishment.
  • It is often seen as active mostly for Third World concerns.
  • Members are characterised as Romantics.
  • Greens are often misrepresented by industry, other parties and the media.
  • They do not have a strong enough electoral base.
  • Party policy tends to be based on equality, economic concerns, education and health care. Note that these issues are not be totally environmental in nature, although they have an important place in the success of environmental programs even in these papers.
Optimistically Yours,
